Maryland Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Personal Injury Protection or "PIP" in Maryland is defined
by the Marland Insurance Administration as "coverage which
pays medical, loss of income, death and/or disability, and loss
of services incurred as a result of an automobile accident."
Maryland Insurance
Article §19-505 discusses coverage
in general.
- PIP is insurance coverage that an insured purchases with an
automobile insurance policy and can be used to pay medical bills
and lost wages for those individuals injured in a car accident.
- Benefits for medical bills and lost wages are available even
if these bills or wages are paid by another source such as the
other driver or your employer. This coverage extends only to those
individuals who were in the vehicle that the PIP policy covers.
- PIP coverage is generally available to everyone in the vehicle
at the time of the accident regardless of fault but there are
exceptions to this.
- Policies in Maryland are usually written in three amounts: $2,500,
$5,000 and $10,000 but can be waived. In order to waive PIP coverage
it has to be done in writing.
