Ms. Mendez understands that building relationships and understanding clients is the key to providing great legal service. Whether counseling individuals or corporate fiduciaries, she is sensitive to the personal nature of estate and tax planning, estate and trust administration, and litigation, and is committed to addressing the unique concerns of each and every one of her clients. She builds innovative, personalized strategies to advance each client’s unique needs and desire to protect financial legacies. Ms. Mendez distills sophisticated legal concepts into clear, actionable advice for her clients with time lines and milestones to achieve goals. She works in tandem with clients’ other advisers, such as financial planners, investment advisors, family office managers, accountants and insurance agents, to coordinate her clients’ estate plans with their financial structure.

Ms. Mendez is regularly involved in complex estate and tax planning matters that require the use of techniques such as split interest charitable trusts, grantor retained annuity trusts, irrevocable insurance trusts, “dynasty trusts,” domestic asset protection trusts, and family limited partnerships. She also works with non-citizen legal permanent residents and nonresident aliens to help them navigate complex international estate planning. Ms. Mendez delivers the technical skill in tax law with the estate planning experience and strategic thinking needed to steer her clients through challenging situations and even the most difficult family dynamics. With her deep experience, Ms. Mendez can often anticipate – and avoid – many potential pitfalls faced by high net worth individuals seeking to preserve their financial legacy, advance their philanthropic goals, and protect their families.

She has extensive experience counseling both corporate and individual executors, personal representatives, trustees, and other fiduciaries in connection with the administration of probate estates and trusts. Ms. Mendez handles a wide range of issues, including representation in court proceedings, assistance with accounting and bookkeeping functions, and analysis of complex income, estate, inheritance, and generation-skipping tax issues. Ms. Mendez holds a master of laws degree in taxation and has extensive experience preparing federal and state estate, inheritance, generation-skipping tax, and fiduciary income tax returns for fiduciaries, and representing the fiduciaries in tax audits and controversies.

Before joining Bodman, Ms. Mendez managed trust and estate administration in the wealth planning division of a major financial institution for nearly 20 years. As a manager, Ms. Mendez developed, implemented, and oversaw programs and teams in multiple states involving all aspects of estate and trust administration, probate proceedings, will and trust litigation, regulatory compliance, and asset valuation. She has extensive experience resolving complex issues involving real estate, closely held businesses, and various investments, which often arise in the context of estate and trust administration. Ms. Mendez utilizes this unique experience to benefit her clients by avoiding regulatory issues, reducing costs in estate and trust administration, and preserving the value of assets in trust.

Ms. Mendez is a member of the State Bar of Michigan (Taxation and Probate and Estate Planning sections), the American Bar Association (Tax and Real Property, Probate, and Estate Planning sections), and the Washtenaw County Bar Association (Member and past chair of the Probate and Estate Planning Section). She is a member of the Washtenaw Estate Planning Council and holds a certification in probate and estate planning from the Institute for Continuing Legal Education.

She is admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
