Staff Attorney – Pro Bono Counsel – Detroit, Troy or Ann Arbor Office – Full Time
Seeking a staff attorney to serve as the firm’s Pro Bono Counsel under the direction of the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. The Pro Bono Counsel has legal and administrative duties, as well as public relations responsibilities. The primary responsibilities are to administer the firm’s pro bono program and to develop and maintain relationships with pro bono referral sources and other stakeholders in the pro bono community. The Pro Bono Counsel will manage case referrals to attorneys, including completion of conflict checks, assignment of client-matter codes, scheduling of attorneys for pro bono clinics, preparation of monthly pro bono summary reports (regarding cases, attorney hours and other data involved in the program) and participation in bi-monthly Pro Bono Committee meetings. The Pro Bono Counsel will also work closely with the firm’s marketing department to publicize the firm’s pro bono efforts, regularly update the firm’s pro bono intranet site and provide training for firm attorneys in a variety of pro bono legal matters, all for the purpose of building and maintaining support for pro bono legal services within the firm and community.
Qualifications: Admission to the Michigan Bar and good academic credentials are required. Prior legal experience is preferred. Should have the ability to learn and understand the wide variety of legal concerns affecting low-income individuals and the organizations that serve them. Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead successful projects. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate effectively with differing audiences. Strong time management and organizational skills. Sound knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and the internet.
