Bodman PLC Announces New “Sunrise Roundtable” Series

By: Bodman PLC

03/16/15

Bodman PLC’s Workplace Law Group attorneys are pleased to announce a new series of quarterly “Sunrise Roundtable” sessions beginning March 31.

Designed to work within the constraints of busy schedules, the complimentary, one-hour roundtables will provide focused updates for human resources professionals, business owners, and other executives, on the latest workplace issues. The sessions will be held in Bodman’s Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Troy offices for the convenience of employers throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.

The first Sunrise Roundtable series will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on March 31 in Ann Arbor, April 1 in Detroit, and April 2 in Troy. A light continental breakfast will be provided.

These sessions will focus on the Department of Labor’s final rule, issued on February 25, 2015, that defines “spouse” under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to include same sex spouses. As a result of the rule, starting March 27, 2015, employers must extend FMLA benefits to same sex spouses if the same sex marriage was legal in the state where it took place.  This means that Michigan employers must grant FMLA benefits to same sex couples legally married elsewhere even though Michigan does not recognize same sex marriage. The roundtable will provide the information employers need to comply with FMLA and will also answer questions regarding when and how retirement, welfare, and other benefits must be provided to same sex spouses.

There is no charge to attend the Sunrise Roundtable. However, advance registration is required by contacting Kristyn Kelley, kkelley@bodmanlaw.com or 313.656.2542.
