Michigan Individual Tax Deadline Automatically Extended to May 17
03/23/21
Through the issuance of a Notice posted to its website, The Michigan Department of Treasury (the “Department”) has extended the deadline for individual taxpayers to both file the applicable 2020 income tax return (e.g., Form MI-1040 or Composite Income Tax Return), and pay the taxes due with the return. The Department extended the filing and payment deadlines pursuant to its general authority to waive penalties and interest.
Importantly, this extension applies only to individual income taxes for 2020; therefore, the original deadlines for trusts and corporations remain in place. Also, there is no extension available for the first quarter estimate due for 2021, which remains due April 15, 2021, and the Department’s Notice did not provide an extension for city income tax returns, but instead left the deadlines applicable for city income taxes to be determined by each respective city income tax administrator.
