Susan Kornfield Presents at Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association Meeting

By: Bodman PLC

04/19/13

Susan M. Kornfield presented "What You Missed in the Rest of the IP World When You Were Stressing Out Over the AIA" to the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association (MIPLA) at the organization’s monthly meeting held at the Somerset Inn in Troy on April 16.

MIPLA is an association of intellectual property attorneys, patent agents, and law students from across the State of Michigan who have an interest in patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other intellectual property issues.

Kornfield discussed cases of national, and in some cases international, significance. Her topics included the ability of individuals and institutions to lawfully import into the U.S. copyrighted content published abroad; the use by artists of logos and other trademarks of third parties when creating their art; copyright protection for images disseminated via Twitter, the fair use rights of professors and students to put copyrighted content on “e-reserves,” and the absence of copyright protection for certain application programming interfaces.

Kornfield, of Bodman’s Ann Arbor office, is a nationally recognized speaker and expert on intellectual property law. She serves on an advisory committee to Stanford University on matters involving libraries and academic information resources and lectures at universities, legal conferences, and business workshops on intellectual property issues. She has been selected as an expert witness, mediator, and arbitrator in intellectual property disputes.

In her legal practice, Kornfield assists clients in intellectual property matters, including information systems acquisition, copyrights, trademarks, e-commerce, noncompete agreements and other post-employment restrictions, and protection against economic espionage. She handles transactional and litigation matters and has been lead counsel in national intellectual property litigation.

Kornfield is listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2013 under Copyright Law, Litigation-Intellectual Property, Technology Law, and Trademark Law. She is listed in Michigan Super Lawyers 2007 as one of the top 50 women attorneys in Michigan and listed in Michigan Super Lawyers 2007-2012 under Intellectual Property.
